Will there ever be Buffy New Sunnydale’s new season as Hulu cancels the show
Gellar originally played Buffy Summers in the iconic series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The show ran for seven seasons between 1997 and 2003 and became one of the most influential supernatural dramas of its era.
The reboot had created huge excitement among longtime fans who hoped to see Buffy return to the screen.
Fans hoping to return to Sunnydale have received disappointing news. Sarah Michelle Gellar has confirmed that the planned reboot titled Buffy: New Sunnydale will not move forward at Hulu.
The actress shared the update through a video message on social media. She said she felt sad about the decision but wanted fans to hear the news directly from her.
In her message, Gellar thanked filmmaker Chloe Zhaowho had been attached to direct the new series. She said working on the project reminded her how much the character still means to her and to the audience.
Gellar explained that even though the revival is not happening now, the connection fans share with the character will not change. She ended her message with a playful line that referenced the show’s world saving theme. She joked that if the apocalypse ever comes, fans can still call Buffy for help.
The reboot had reportedly planned to revisit the Buffy universe decades after the original story.
Buffy fans react to Hulu decision
Fans quickly filled social media with emotional reactions after the announcement.
Many viewers said they were already rewatching the original series in preparation for the reboot.
Some fans begged other networks or streaming platforms to pick up the project. Others simply shared their disappointment.
For many viewers, Buffy was more than just a television show. It became a cultural symbol of strong female heroes during the late 1990s and early 2000s.
The franchise also expanded beyond the main series. A popular spin off titled Angel aired from 1999 to 2004 and followed the character Angel in his own story.
Even though Buffy: New Sunnydale is no longer moving forward at Hulu, fans are still holding onto hope that the beloved vampire slayer could return to screens in the future.
