Weather Update: Cold returns in March, rain and temperature drop due to Western Disturbance
These days the weather has taken a complete turn in Delhi. Just a few days ago, people were troubled by the heat and had kept warm clothes, but now again they have to take out sweaters and shawls. In the month of March, when summer was just beginning in the city, suddenly there has been coolness and rain. All this has happened due to a ‘rare’ Western Disturbance. This is a weather system that usually comes in winter, but this time in March it has come so powerful and big that large parts of North India have been affected. Due to this disturbance, an area of clouds and rain about 1000 kilometers long has formed, which is spread over Delhi, NCR and surrounding areas. Due to this, the weather in Delhi started changing from Wednesday evening itself, which intensified on Thursday and Friday.
There was considerable rain in Delhi-NCR on Friday. The minimum morning temperature dropped to 16 degrees Celsius, which is about 4.5 degrees below normal. This data has come from Safdarjung station of India Meteorological Department (IMD). Even on Thursday, there were occasional rains and strong winds in the city, due to which it remained cool. The maximum temperature of the day fell below 30 degrees for the first time in almost a month and was recorded at only 26.8 degrees. It was 4.7 degrees below normal and the lowest maximum temperature since February 24 was 29.9 degrees.
Had received advance warning of bad weather
Weather experts have described it as quite unusual and rare. Climate scientist Dr. Pradeep said on the X handle that this western disturbance is of a very different kind. A straight trough thousands of kilometers long has formed in it, which does not usually happen. This can cause strong storm, thunder and rain, so be careful and follow the information from IMD. He had warned on March 15 itself that from March 20 to 25, a similar low pressure line would pass through North-West, Central and North-East India, which could bring heavy rain, hail and dust storm at many places.
Danger of water logging in some places
Meteorologist Navdeep Dahiya also posted on Friday morning that the disturbance has now become completely intense. There may be moderate to heavy rain in Delhi-NCR, Haryana and Chandigarh till evening. There is a danger of water logging at some places and it will feel like a cold day. Many cities of Uttar Pradesh like Lucknow and Kanpur will also be affected. Another expert Professor RV, while sharing satellite photos, said that he has never seen such a big western disturbance. Its spread is like ‘madness’.
It will be cold till April
Although it will shift towards the east in the afternoon, but more systems are going to arrive around 23rd and 28th March. He jokingly said that we should enjoy winter till March and maybe the first week of April. But IMD says that this relief will not last long. As the western disturbance weakens, the temperature will start rising again.
Summer will return in a few days
The maximum temperature will increase from Friday itself. By Sunday it may reach 31 degrees, and will be around 32 degrees on Monday-Tuesday. Summer will return again in the last days of the month. The minimum temperature may remain between 12-14 degrees in the next few days, but the nights will also gradually start getting warmer. Overall, this period of coolness and rain is temporary. The guest is only for a few days, so those who had kept warm clothes in the cupboard, should wait for a while.
