Women become more addicted to alcohol than men, know the reason

New Delhi. Men have always been ahead in the race of drinking alcohol compared to women. But now all these things are becoming old. Women are walking shoulder to shoulder with men everywhere and are now outpacing men even in the race of drinking alcohol. Women born between 1991 and 2000 are drinking as much alcohol as men. Not only this, this generation is leaving men behind in the rate of drinking. But in the pursuit of becoming fashionable and modern, the bad effects of liquor have started appearing on women. According to US government statistics, between 2000 and 2015, deaths from cirrhosis among women aged 45 to 64 years have increased by 57 percent. Whereas in this category, 21 percent men died due to cirrhosis. At the same time, there has been an 18 percent increase in the number of deaths due to cirrhosis among women aged between 25 to 44 years, whereas there has been a 10 percent decrease in the number of deaths due to cirrhosis among male counterparts of the same age group. Not only this, the number of women reaching hospital emergency after alcohol overdose is also increasing.

This is the reason

The problem is not that women are drinking more alcohol, but the thing is that alcohol affects them more and in a different way than men. According to scientists, a very limited amount of alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) enzyme is produced in the body of women, which is located in the liver and it works to break down alcohol in the body.

  • What could be the reason for this?

Don Sugarman, professor of psychology at Harvard Medical School and addiction psychologist at McLean Hospital, Massachusetts, says, “Women who drink alcohol have more problems than men because they are more susceptible to the effects of alcohol. Body fat protects alcohol while the water present in the body reduces its effect, so naturally due to more fat and less water in the body, women are more affected by alcohol.

Women who consume excessive alcohol are more likely to become addicted to it and have medical problems. This is called telescoping. Meaning, of course, women start drinking alcohol later than men, but they soon become addicted to it. Not only this, women are also more likely to suffer from liver and heart problems.

Other disadvantages of drinking alcohol in women

    1. Liver Disease- The risk of cirrhosis and other alcohol related diseases is higher in women than in men.

    2. Its effect on the brain- Alcohol has more effect on the brain in women than in men.

    3. Its effect on heart- Women who drink alcohol in excess are at risk of heart disease compared to men.

    4. Breast Cancer-

Increasing the amount of alcohol increases the risk of cancer in the mouth, throat, esophagus and liver. In women, drinking even moderate amounts of alcohol has been shown to increase the risk of breast cancer.
