Hyderabad: In a remarkable shift, women have been consistently outperforming men in the Civil Services Examination, achieving a higher success rate.
The data released by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) tells a compelling story of women’s success in one of the toughest examinations in the country.
In Civil Services Main Examination 2021, women recorded a success rate of 15.1 per cent, which was double than men, apart from 17.9 per cent in 2020 and 14.6 per cent in 2019. In stark contrast, men had success rates of 7.2 per cent in 2021, 6.6 per cent in 2020.
Data reveal that women in all communities have outperformed men in terms of the success rate. Among categories, ST women recorded a high success rate of 20 per cent, followed by 18.5 per cent women in EWS category, 15.3 per cent in OBC, 14.4 per cent in SC and 14.2 per cent in general category in 2021.
Coaching experts attribute the high success rate among women to several factors, including access to education and coaching.
“Unlike men, women do not get more chances as there is pressure from the family to get married. So, pressure and their determination make them excel in the examination,” says Deepika Reddy, Director Shikara Academy.
While women recorded a high success rate, the absolute number of women recommended for the appointment saw a slight decline from 238 in 2020 to 201 in 2021. The number of women candidates interviewed in 2020 and 2021 were 437 and 408 respectively.
