  • Rahul Gandhi attacked the government over women’s reservation
  • Warning of opposition to delimitation and constitutional amendment

Rahul Gandhi News: Leader of the Opposition during the ongoing debate on delimitation and women’s reservation in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi He strongly attacked the central government. “The BJP is trying to change the political map of the country on the issue of women,” he said, lashing out at the government over the issue of caste census and OBC reservation.

Support for Priyanka Gandhi’s ‘Chanakya’ comment

Rahul Gandhi began his speech by praising his sister and Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. “Priyanka has done what I have not been able to do in the last 20 years,” he hailed Priyanka Gandhi’s maiden speech. Rahul Gandhi said that Priyanka’s comment on the government by mentioning ‘Chanakya’ in Parliament on Thursday was ‘very effective’.

“True strength is hidden”

In his speech, Rahul Gandhi also shared a personal memory from his childhood. “My grandmother and former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi told me that real power always works in hiding. The biggest fear a man has is himself,” he said. Using this statement, he drew the attention of the House to how power is being used covertly in the current political situation. Meanwhile, in a light-hearted tone, he mentioned the Prime Minister and said, “There is no ‘Wife Issue’ between me and the Prime Minister.” Along with this, he highlighted the importance of the role of women in the progress of the country.

“BJP’s ploy to change political map”

Targeting the central government, Rahul Gandhi said that the government is diverting the attention of the people from the main issues by showing the carrot of women’s reservation. “BJP is afraid of caste census. Everyone knows how Dalit and OBC women have been treated in our society. Instead of giving due place to OBCs and Dalits in the power structure, BJP is looking for a loophole,” he alleged. He also said that there is an atmosphere of fear in the BJP due to changing politics and they are seeing their power weakening.

Warning of opposition to delimitation and constitutional amendment

Commenting on the apprehension in southern and northeastern states over the delimitation issue, Rahul Gandhi assured that “the opposition will protect your rights.” He warned the government that whatever the central government was trying to do would require a constitutional amendment and the entire opposition would not allow such ‘unconstitutional’ efforts to succeed under any circumstances.

Bill Voting Equations

The Modi government needs a two-thirds majority to pass three bills related to women’s reservation. There are currently 540 Members of Parliament (MPs) in the Lok Sabha; This means that 360 votes are needed for a two-thirds majority. At present, the government has 293 seats in the Lok Sabha. In contrast, the combined strength of opposition and other parties is 232. As a result, 360 votes are required to pass this bill. This means that the government is falling short of the required ‘magic number’ of 67 votes which indicates that the balance of power in the Lok Sabha is currently not in the government’s favour. Major political parties like Congress, Samajwadi Party (SP), DMK (DMK) and Trinamool Congress (TMC) are opposing the bill. In particular, the Samajwadi Party has now raised the issue of ‘Muslim reservation’ in this discussion; They argue that the women’s reservation framework should include reservation for Muslim women along with reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBCs).
