World Population Day is celebrated every year on 11 July. The purpose of this day is not only to discuss the increasing population but also to make people aware on important topics like education, health, employment, gender equality, family planning and human development. In today’s time, the biggest challenge is to contribute to the progress of the country and the world by developing the increasing population as a human resource instead of considering it a burden.
What is its history?
World Population Day was started in 1989 at the initiative of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). Its inspiration came from ‘Five Billion Day’ of 11 July 1987, when the world population symbolically reached 5 billion. After this the United Nations adopted this day as a global awareness campaign.
How did the world’s population increase?
According to history, the world population reached 1 billion for the first time in the year 1804. Due to advances in medicine, vaccination, sanitation and agriculture, the population grew rapidly and the global population will cross the 8 billion mark in 2022.
