World’s second best airport hits 1 billion passengers in record-breaking time

South Korea’s Incheon International Airport, ranked the world’s second-best airport behind Singapore’s Changi in the 2026 Skytrax World Airport Awards, has become the fastest major aviation hub to surpass 1 billion cumulative passengers.

The airport reached the milestone just 25 years and three months after opening in March 2001, setting a global record and outperforming every other international hub, according to Incheon International Airport Corp, as cited by The Korea Times.

Germany’s Munich Airport took 33 years and 10 months to reach the same milestone, followed by Singapore’s Changi Airport at 35 years and five months, the South China Morning Post reported.

Japan’s Narita International Airport required 39 years and two months, while Dubai International Airport in the United Arab Emirates took 58 years and two months.

Last year, Incheon International Airport handled 74.07 million international passengers and 2.95 million tonnes of international cargo, cementing its position as the world’s third-busiest airport for international passengers, after Dubai International Airport and London Heathrow, according to the Airports Council International.
