WPL 2026: Big record broken on the first day itself, Mumbai Indians bowler created history
The first match of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2026 was played on Friday (January 9) between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). MI all-rounder Amelia Kerr made a big record in this high-voltage match held at DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. Amelia took two wickets in her very first over of this season and overtook Hayley Mathews to take the most wickets in WPL history.
Hayley Mathews also plays for MI. She could not participate in the match against RCB due to illness. He has 41 wickets in his name in 29 WPL matches. Amelia also took 40 wickets after playing the same number of matches. On Friday, she played her 30th match and defeated Mathews.

Amelia broke the back of RCB
After losing the toss and opting to bat first, MI recovered from the bad start and scored 154 runs losing 6 wickets in 20 overs. Nicola Carey and Sajeevan Sajna made a partnership of 82 runs for the fifth wicket to reach a respectable score. While Nicola scored 40 runs in 29 balls, Sajna played a brilliant innings of 45 runs in 25 balls with the help of 7 fours and 1 six. Nadine Declerc took 4 wickets for RCB.
When the RCB team came out to chase the target, the pair of captain Smriti Mandhana and Grace Harris gave it a blazing start. Both scored 40 runs in just 3.5 overs. Shabnim Ismail broke this partnership by dismissing Smriti (18). In the next over, Nat-Siver Brunt took the big wicket of Harris (25).
Amanjot Kaur sent Dayalan Hemlata to the pavilion. Amelia, who was put on the bowling attack in the eighth over, clean bowled Radha Yadav as soon as she came and then by getting Richa Ghosh caught at long off on the fourth ball of the same over, she not only became the most successful bowler of WPL, but also broke the back of RCB’s batting order.
