Even Ashwin's coach could not believe it, said – 'The next WTC circle should also have been played'
Ravichandran Ashwin, one of India's finest red-ball spinners, shocked the cricket world by retiring from international cricket after the Gabba Test against Australia was drawn. The sudden decision surprised even Ashwin's childhood coach Sunil Subramaniam, who believed that the veteran spinner could play for India till the 2025-2027 World Test Championship cycle.
As soon as the third Test match between India and Australia was drawn, Ashwin came to the press conference with captain Rohit Sharma and announced his retirement from all three formats. Rohit Sharma later revealed that Ashwin will not be with the team for the remaining matches of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and will return to India on December 19.
Speaking to Rediff.com, Subramanian accepted Ashwin's decision but admitted that he felt the spinner could have played at least a few more years. Subramanian said, “I was very surprised. He could have played in the World Test Championship 2025-2027 cycle, there were a lot of domestic Tests, after that he could have left the game. But now he has retired, we respect his decision. Should do, perhaps he might have had his own reasons.”
Speaking further, Ashwin's coach said, “He was absolutely fearless. He always wanted to try new things, develop himself, failures motivated him to do better. He was always a thinking person. He He was a man in his own right, Ashwin was absolutely fearless, his mind always reacted first, he was an intelligent cricketer, a good thinking cricketer.”
If we talk about Ashwin's career, Ashwin made his debut for India in 2011 against West Indies. Over the next decade, he cemented his place as a key figure in India's Test setup. In 113 Test matches, Ashwin took 537 wickets at an extraordinary average and scored more than 3,500 runs with the bat. Due to his all-round performance, the Indian team won many matches but now Ashwin will not play for India, so it will be interesting to see which player will cement his place in the Indian team in his place.
