WWE NXT Highlights: Tony D’Angelo Retains NXT Title, Kendal Grey Accepts Underground Challenge

WWE NXT took place at the WWE Performance Center in Orlando, Florida. The show continued the build toward Heatwave.

Tony D’Angelo defended the NXT Championship against Naraku in a Street Fight.

Saquon Shugars teamed with Romeo Moreno and Noam Dar against DarkState. Jaida Parker faced Nattie Neidhart in a singles match. Reina Volcan also made her in-ring debut.

DarkState (Cutler James, Dion Lennox, & Osiris Griffin) vs. Noam Dar, Romeo Moreno, & Saquon Shugars

DarkState defeated Noam Dar, Romeo Moreno, and Saquon Shugars in the opening six-man tag match. The fight began before the bell as Shugars attacked his former teammates. Both teams traded momentum, with Shugars leading several fast-paced attacks. Dar and Moreno also had strong moments, but DarkState’s power kept them in control. Shugars nearly turned the match around before taking out Dion Lennox with a Blu-Ray through the barricade. That left Romeo Moreno alone against the remaining members of DarkState. Osiris Griffin and his teammates hit a double powerbomb on Moreno to score the pinfall victory.

Kendal Grey Accepts Lola Vice’s NXT Underground Challenge

Kendal Grey and Lola Vice had a heated confrontation over the NXT Women’s Championship. Grey said she gave Vice another title shot even though she wanted a new challenger. Vice replied that she was not finished and believed she was still meant to be champion. The two exchanged personal insults, with Vice questioning Grey’s confidence and Grey saying the championship proved her worth. Vice claimed Grey could beat her in a match but not in a fight. She then challenged Grey to an NXT Underground match on August 4. Grey accepted, and the two ended the segment face-to-face.

Hank Walker vs Keanu Carver

Keanu Carver defeated Hank Walker after a physical match. Walker started fast and nearly won after hitting several powerful moves, but Carver stayed in the fight. Tank Ledger tried to encourage his partner from ringside, but Carver attacked him and threw him into the steel steps. Walker briefly fought back before missing a diving lariat. Carver took advantage by hitting a Pounce and then the Shouten to score the pinfall. After the match, Carver attacked Walker and Ledger until Edris Prosper rushed in through the crowd. Prosper helped Hank and Tank clear the ring and stand tall.

Jaida Parker vs Nattie Neidhart

Jaida Parker defeated Nattie Neidhart by submission in a hard-fought match. Nattie targeted Parker’s injured knee and controlled long stretches of the contest. Parker fought through the pain and nearly won with a Falcon Arrow before both women traded submission attempts. Neidhart could not lock in the Sharpshooter, allowing Parker to turn the tables. Parker applied her own Sharpshooter in the middle of the ring and refused to let go. As Neidhart struggled to escape, Thea Hail unexpectedly threw in the towel, giving Parker the submission victory. Karmen Petrovic and Nikkita Lyons were also involved at ringside throughout the match.

Niko Vance vs Shawn Spears

Shawn Spears defeated Niko Vance by disqualification after a chaotic match. Both men brawled inside and outside the ring, with Izzi Dame repeatedly getting involved. Spears gained momentum late and grabbed a steel chair, but the referee tried to stop him. Lizzy Rain then pulled Izzi off the apron, leading to a fight at ringside. During the confusion, Spears threw the chair to the mat and tricked the referee into thinking Vance had used it. The referee disqualified Niko, giving Spears the win with the classic Eddie Guerrero-style tactic. Referees then held Vance back after the match.

Reina Volcan vs Skylar Raye

Reina Volcan defeated Skylar Raye in a dominant singles match. Volcan used her strength from the opening bell, knocking Raye down with powerful slams and keeping control for most of the contest. Skylar mounted a brief comeback with quick offense, including a tilt-a-whirl facebuster for a near fall. However, Volcan quickly stopped the rally and regained control. She lifted Raye into an Argentine backbreaker rack and locked in the Natural Disaster submission. Skylar had no choice but to tap out, giving Volcan another impressive victory.

Naraku vs Tony D’Angelo (c) (NXT Men’s Championship Street Fight)

Tony D’Angelo retained the NXT Championship by defeating Naraku in a brutal Street Fight. Naraku attacked immediately with mist and used chairs, kendo sticks, ladders, and tables to punish the champion. Tony fought back with several big weapon shots and even turned Naraku’s mist against him. Both men crashed through barricades, the announce desk, and other weapons during the match. In the end, D’Angelo hit a Rock Bottom off the steel steps through a table to secure the pinfall. After the match, Mike Santana appeared through the crowd and confronted the champion to close the show.
