X-Men ’97 Season 2: Plot Details
Season 2 begins just after the finale of Season 1, “Tolerance is Extinction.” While a major event has occurred to separate the X-Men throughout time:
- The X-Men have split into several groups and ended up in different times (for example: 1997 in the present; the addition of a young En Sabah Nur/Apocalypse in 3000 B.C.E. in the past, and the addition of a young Nathan Summers/Cable in the future at approximately A.D. 3960 to A.D. 3980 at the time Scott and Jean interact with him).
- Apocalypse will be one of the main villains of this season, with foreshadowings of the possibility of his origins, potential Horsemen of Apocalypse, and conflicts throughout multiple timelines. The post-credits scene at the end of the last episode from Season 1, when Gambit’s card turns to ash, coupled with the fact that many view Gambit as a future love interest for Rogue,e has added a layer of intrigue to the theme of resurrection or manipulation.
In Season 2, story elements may draw from past X-Men stories, including The Adventures of Cyclops and Phoenix; the various time-travel stories, Wolverine’s loss and recovery of his adamantium, and the effect of Genosha on the X-Men emotionally.
The X-Men will be split into discrete units, will create new teams and alliances, will have a lot of new tensions between the governments and mutants, and will partake in huge battles throughout time. Season 2 should maintain the serious and emotionally deep tones of Season 1, but broaden the scope.
The prequel comic is explicitly to be a showcase of “the time-spanning saga,” as well as introducing many new characters and teams, and telling a story of survival in a world that has a goal of hunting down mutants. It is expected that the prequel comic will address the cliffhanger regarding the X-Men being “lost in time.” There will be no complete episode.
