Xabi Alonso Quits Real Madrid After El Classico Loss
Former Spanish international and Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso has left his job with the Los Blancos after a defeat to arch-rivals FC Barcelona in the final of the Spanish Super Cup.
The most recent El Classico, which is a Real Madrid vs Barcelona clash, was in the final of the Supercopa de Espana. The match was played at the King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and ended in a 2-3 win for the Blaugrana.
For Barca, Raphinha scored two goals, while Robert Lewandowski scored one. On the other hand, the Madristas, Vinicius Jr and Gonzalo Garcia, scored one each in the extra time of the first half.
Following another trophy lost, Alonso left Real Madrid by mutual agreement. The club legend replaced Carlo Ancelotti as Real’s manager at the end of the 2024/25 season. In the previous season, the Spanish giants had dropped the La Liga title to Barcelona, finishing second in the league.
Before joining the Madrid-based team, Xabi Alonso had a very successful stint as the manager of German club Bayer Leverkusen. In the 2023-24 season, the team went undefeated for almost the entire season, winning the Bundesliga, the DFB-Pokal, and the DFB Supercup, with the only loss coming in the final of the UEFA Europa League.
However, the 44-year-old was unable to impart similar success to Real Madrid during his managerial stint in Spain. While he did win 13 out of his first 14 games this season, Alonso and Real have been in horrid form since November 4, winning only twice in eight games.
While the team was on a five-match winning streak before the most recent loss against Barcelona, that was not enough to prolong his stint as the manager.
Real Madrid’s Statement On Xabi Alonso Leaving
In a statement released by Real Madrid, announcing the parting of ways with Xabi Alonso, the club stated:
“Real Madrid C.F. announces that, by mutual agreement between the club and Xabi Alonso, it has been decided to end his tenure as first-team coach,” the club said in a brief statement on Monday.
“Xabi Alonso will always have the affection and admiration of all Madrid fans, because he is a Real Madrid legend and has always represented the values of our club. Real Madrid will always be his home. Our club thanks Xabi Alonso and his entire coaching staff for their work and dedication during this time and wishes them the best of luck in this new chapter of their lives.”
After Alonso’s release, Real Madrid has announced that Alvaro Arbeloa, who had been the coach of Los Blancos’ reserve team, Castilla, will take over for now.
