Xi Jinping Meets Taiwan’s Opposition Leader: An important diplomatic development has come to light amid increasing tension between China and Taiwan. Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Cheng Li-wun, leader of Taiwan’s opposition party Kuomintang (KMT) in Beijing. During this, he reiterated China’s old stance regarding Taiwan and emphasized on ‘solidarity’ and ‘one family’.

According to Chinese state media, the meeting took place at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. During the meeting, Xi Jinping said that he was confident that the people of China and Taiwan would be united. He said that the people living on both sides of the Taiwan Strait are Chinese and the future of relations is also in their hands.

Cheng Li-wun on visit to China

Cheng Li-wun, president of Taiwan’s main opposition party Kuomintang, is on a tour of China these days. He has described his visit as a ‘peace mission’, the aim of which is to reduce the rising tension between the two sides. This visit is taking place at a time when China is increasing military pressure on Taiwan. Xi Jinping said that the current global situation is not completely peaceful, hence it is very important to maintain peace. He also stressed the need to improve relations through dialogue.

Jinping chanted ‘One China Policy’

According to Taiwan media, Jinping again reiterated that the people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait are part of the same family. This is being seen as an attempt to strengthen China’s ‘One China Policy’.

Meanwhile, the US has continued its support for Taiwan despite it not having formal diplomatic relations. The US is considered Taiwan’s biggest international supporter and arms supplier. China has been continuously demanding America to stop giving arms to Taiwan.

Tension may increase between China and Taiwan

The current government of Taiwan opposes China’s stance. Even in the year 2023, tension remained between the two for a long time. In recent times, China has intensified its military activities around the Taiwan Strait, which has further increased tension in the region.
