Yashasvi Jaiswal becomes the youngest Indian to score 1000 test runs in a calendar year

Pune: Indian opener Yashasvi Jaiswal became the youngest Indian to score 1000 Test runs in a calendar year on the second day of the second Test against New Zealand at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium on Friday.

The 22-year-old batsman overtook the previous record of Dilip Vengsarkar, who touched the 1000-run mark in 1979 at the age of 23. Currently, Jaiswal is second in the list of highest Test run-scorers in 2024 behind England's Joe Root, who has scored 1305 runs in 14 matches.

Jaiswal's form this year has seen him score 1007 runs at an average of 59.23 in just 10 matches, including two centuries and six half-centuries. With three more Test matches left in 2024, he has a chance to break some of the biggest records made by Indian greats.

The most important thing is that Sachin Tendulkar holds the record for scoring the most Test runs by an Indian in a calendar year, who scored 1562 runs in 14 matches in 2010. Virender Sehwag's 1462 runs in 2008 are the most runs scored by an Indian opener in a year.
