From civilizational heritage to global identity
Yoga is one of the world’s most ancient knowledge traditions, whose roots reach back to the Indus-Saraswati Civilization. The Sanskrit word ‘Yoga’ means to connect or unite, which is considered a symbol of coordination of body, mind and soul. Yoga is mentioned in the Vedas, Upanishads, Buddhist and Jain traditions as well as the Ramayana and Mahabharata. Maharishi Patanjali gave a systematic form to the philosophical and practical structure of Yoga through Yoga Sutras. Over the centuries, sages and Yogacharyas have preserved and enriched this knowledge tradition and spread it across the world. This ancient heritage of India has over time taken the form of a global health movement.
UN recognition and India’s initiative
The United Nations General Assembly declared 21 June as International Yoga Day in the year 2014. The proposal in this regard was put forward by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the 69th session of the United Nations General Assembly, which got the support of 175 member countries. The first International Yoga Day was celebrated on June 21, 2015. After this, in the year 2016, UNESCO included Yoga in the representative list of intangible cultural heritage of humanity. This recognition gave a new identity to India’s contribution in the field of global health and established Yoga as a worldwide mass movement.

Yoga Day organized across the country
International Yoga Day is celebrated through thousands of programs across the country, while the main national event is organized in different cities every year. It started from Rajpath in New Delhi. After this, cities like Chandigarh, Lucknow, Dehradun, Ranchi, Mysuru, Jabalpur, Srinagar and Visakhapatnam have become hosts. Over the course of 11 events, Yoga Day has evolved from a global event to a mass movement of preventive health, healthy lifestyle and mental balance. Currently it is celebrated in more than 190 countries.
Common Yoga Protocol becomes global basis
To celebrate Yoga Day in a uniform and coordinated manner across the world, the Ministry of AYUSH had prepared the Common Yoga Protocol (CYP) in 2015 in collaboration with leading yoga institutions and experts. It is a 45-minute standardized yoga practice program, which includes body-building exercises, yogasanas, kapalbhati, pranayama, meditation and relaxation techniques. It has been designed in such a way that people of different age groups and backgrounds can practice it easily. In the year 2026, institutions have also been allowed to add additional 15 minutes for activities like Pranayam, Yoga Nidra, Meditation and Satsang as per requirement.

Will be in Kolkata 12Main event of th Yoga Day
The 12th edition of International Yoga Day is being celebrated on June 21, 2026 and this time Kolkata is hosting the main national event. This year’s theme is ‘Yoga for Healthy Aging’, which emphasizes on better health, active living and overall well-being as we age. This theme underlines the importance of increasing healthy life span rather than merely extending life span, amid the growing aging population worldwide and the challenges of non-communicable diseases.
Yoga as the cornerstone of healthy living
According to experts, healthy aging not only means a long life, but also maintaining the ability to work, mobility, mental health and social participation throughout life. Yoga emerges in this direction as a holistic practice, which combines physical activity, breathing control and mental concentration together. Asanas like Tadasana and Trikonasana improve posture and flexibility of the body, while Bhujangasana and Makarasana are helpful in strengthening and relaxing the spine. Pranayamas like Anulom-Vilom and Bhramari enhance mental peace and respiratory awareness. Meditation strengthens mental balance and concentration.
100 Preparations started from the countdown of the day
Preparations for International Yoga Day 2026 had started long ago. The 100-day countdown program was launched on 13 March 2026 from Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi. After this, 75-day countdown programs were organized in Lonar, Maharashtra and 50-day countdown programs were organized in Kanha Shanti Vanam, Hyderabad. Thousands of people collectively practiced common yoga protocols in these events. The special nationwide live yoga session held on June 14 also created a new Guinness World Record with the participation of more than four lakh people.
Yoga related to heritage sites
The preparations for Yoga Day were also linked to the cultural and natural heritage of the country. The 25-day countdown program organized at the Khajuraho Group of Monuments brought together the message of Yoga and heritage conservation. Along with this, ‘100 Days, 100 Cities, 100 Organizations’ campaign was also launched, which aims to inspire institutions and communities to make yoga a part of daily life.
From young adults to senior citizens, Yoga offers pathways to well-being for all.

sum 365: not a day, year-long campaign
In the year 2026, the focus of Yoga Day has not been limited to June 21 only. Through the ‘Yoga 365’ initiative, people are being encouraged to make yoga a part of their daily routine throughout the year. The initiative is supported by public awareness campaigns, digital platforms and institutional support. Its aim is to take yoga to home, school, workplace and community level.
New Initiatives and Special Protocols
The Ministry of AYUSH has launched many new initiatives this year. Particularly noteworthy among these is ‘Yoga for Air Travel’, which has been developed by Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga keeping in mind health and comfort during long air journeys. Apart from this, 10 special yoga protocols have also been developed for non-communicable diseases. These include special modules for diabetes, high blood pressure, asthma and mental health issues. Different yoga modules have been prepared for children, teenagers, elderly, women, pregnant women and people undergoing de-addiction process.
Increasing participation through digital platforms
Quiz, photography, poster and short video competitions are being organized on the ‘MyGov’ platform to increase citizen participation. Apart from this, program registration, coordination and development of yoga sites are being promoted through ‘Yoga Sangam Portal’ and ‘Yoga Park Portal’. The aim of these digital initiatives is to make yoga more accessible and keep people engaged with it throughout the year.
Campaign continued even during pandemic
Despite the ban on public events during the Covid-19 pandemic, the celebration of International Yoga Day continued through digital mediums. Themes like ‘Yoga at home, Yoga with family’ and ‘Yoga for wellness’ underlined the usefulness of yoga during the global health crisis. This period proved that yoga is capable of keeping people mentally and physically strong even in changing circumstances.
2025 completed a decade in
The 11th edition of International Yoga Day was held in the year 2025, the theme of which was ‘Yoga for One Earth, One Health’. On this occasion, more than 13 lakh programs were organized across the country, in which more than 26 crore people participated. More than three lakh people participated in the main event held in Visakhapatnam and two Guinness World Records were created. This event made it clear that Yoga Day is no longer just an annual event, but has become a national movement for health and wellness.
Growing popularity globally
Over the past decade, International Yoga Day has reached major public venues, universities and cultural centers across the world. Yoga Day is being celebrated on a large scale from the United Nations Headquarters in New York to Japan, South Africa, Brazil, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Egypt, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Argentina and Croatia. In the year 2026, more than 210 Indian embassies are organizing Yoga Day programs at approximately 2,500 locations across the world in coordination with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR).
from one day 365 journey till day
The main message of International Yoga Day 2026 is clear that yoga is not a practice limited only to June 21. Efforts are being made to make it a part of daily life through ‘Yoga 365’, community programs, common yoga protocols and institutional partnerships. The real effect of yoga will be visible only when people include it in their lifestyle throughout the year. This is the biggest achievement and future direction of International Yoga Day.
