In politics, you cannot take everything to heart, said the Supreme Court while hearing the minister's petition

New Delhi: The Supreme Court today while hearing the petition of Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting L. Murugan regarding the proceedings initiated against him in a criminal defamation case said that in politics you cannot take everything to heart. Murugan had approached the apex court last year challenging the Madras High Court order of September 5, 2023.

The Madras High Court had in December 2020 refused to quash proceedings against Murugan on a complaint filed by the Chennai-based Murasoli Trust over his alleged defamatory statements during a press conference.

The apex court had on September 27 last year agreed to hear his plea and stayed the proceedings pending against Murugan in a special court in Chennai. The bench had also sought a response from the Murasoli Trust on his plea.

When the case came up for hearing on Friday before a bench of Justice B.R. Gavai and Justice K.V. Vishwanathan, the lawyer representing Murugan said, where is the question of defamation in this case? The lawyer representing the trust requested to postpone the hearing of the case. The bench said that in politics you cannot take everything to heart.

The Supreme Court said that the hearing will be held after four weeks on the request of the respondent's lawyer. Murugan had approached the High Court challenging the proceedings against him. The High Court had said in its order that according to the trust, Murugan had made the statement with an 'obvious intention of maligning and tarnishing the reputation of Murasoli Trust in the eyes of the general public.
