Youth accused of social media addiction, problems increased due to demand of 1.4 trillion dollar fine on Meta

New Delhi . Social media company Meta has once again come to the center of legal disputes in America. The parent company of Facebook and Instagram has been accused of designing its platform in such a way that it increased the addiction of social media among teenagers and young users and the company did not provide complete and accurate information to the people about the potential security threats. On the basis of these serious allegations, four states of America have demanded a fine of about 1.4 trillion dollars on Meta. If this demand is accepted in the court, it will be considered one of the largest economic penalties proposed against technology companies.

The cases, filed in California, Colorado, Kentucky and New Jersey, allege that Meta developed its platform in a way that kept young users on screens for longer periods of time. It is alleged that the company increased the dependence of users through algorithms and other features and did not exercise sufficient transparency regarding the possible effects on mental health. States say that a large number of teenagers have been affected due to this and on this basis heavy fines have been demanded.

Meta has completely rejected all these allegations in its reply filed in the court. The company says the proposed fine is beyond the facts and legal basis. According to Meta, there is no example of penalty of such a huge amount in cases related to consumer protection. The company also claims that Facebook and Instagram are constantly being updated with new security features keeping in mind the safety of the youth and the allegations related to social media addiction have no solid basis.

In this matter, not only four states but many other states of America have also initiated separate legal action against Meta. A total of 29 states have accused the company in federal court of violating child and teen data collection and online privacy laws. These cases also say that the company collected information related to minors without proper parental consent, which may be a violation of federal laws.

  • Legal experts believe that this matter will not be limited to Meta only but can play an important role in determining the functioning and accountability of all big social media companies in future. If the court rules in favor of the states, it could pave the way for new and strict rules to be implemented across the world regarding the safety of children and adolescents on digital platforms.

Now the next important hearing of this much discussed case will be held in the US federal court in August. During this time, the court will decide how much legal strength is there in the allegations leveled against Meta and whether it would be appropriate to impose a heavy financial penalty on the company. The eyes of tech companies and digital industry around the world are now fixed on this decision as it may impact the global social media industry as well.
