In many countries of America, Europe and Asia including India, millions of users suddenly faced problems like ‘Server Error’ and video buffering. #YouTubeDown started trending on social media. Now Google has revealed the technical reasons behind this big crisis.

What happened suddenly?

According to reports, this problem was seen on both desktop and mobile apps. Users complained that neither their homepages were loading nor search results were visible. Creators using YouTube Studio also faced problems in uploading their videos and checking analytics. This largest center of entertainment and education in the world remained at a standstill for about 2 hours.

What reason did Google give?

YouTube’s parent company Google has taken responsibility for this outage. ‘Backend Configuration Error’ Has been held responsible. According to the company’s engineers:

Server overload: Due to heavy traffic and internal system updates, the main server stopped responding.

Software Bug: A small bug in the system had blocked the data processing unit, due to which the video stream stopped.

Questions are being raised regarding security

Due to such sudden closure of YouTube, concerns were also raised regarding data security and privacy. However, YouTube issued an official statement clarifying that this was not a cyber attack and the users’ data is completely safe. The team reset the system and restored services within a few hours.
