Famous tabla player Zakir Hussain laid to rest in San Francisco cemetery

Famous tabla player Zakir Hussain was laid to rest in San Francisco cemetery on Thursday. Zakir Hussain was 73 years old. Hundreds of fans gathered at the funeral of Zakir Hussain to pay tribute to him.

Zakir was suffering from the lung disease Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis. On Thursday, he was laid to rest with tearful eyes in San Francisco. According to media reports, drummer Anandan Shivamani had also arrived to bid farewell to Zakir Hussain.

Zakir Hussain is survived by his wife Antonia Minnecola and daughters Anisa Qureshi and Isabella Qureshi. The demise of the famous tabla player has marked the end of an era in the world of music. “He leaves behind an extraordinary legacy cherished by countless music lovers around the world, whose impact will last for generations to come,” the family statement said.

Zakir Hussain was born on March 9, 1951 as the eldest son of famous tabla player Ustad Allah Rakha. He started his professional career in Indian classical music at the age of 12. Started performing on international stages at the age of 18.

Zakir Hussain's work was not limited to classical music only. He also collaborated with some of music's greatest names, such as George Harrison, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, and jazz musician Herbie Hancock. Zakir Hussain was not only a great tabla player but also an excellent musician.

He also gave music for films like Heat and Dust and In Custody. He also created some magical compositions for international ballet and orchestral productions. The music legend had won four Grammy Awards in his career spanning six decades. Zakir Hussain was awarded Padma Shri in the year 1988. After this, he was honored with the highest awards like Padma Bhushan in the year 2002 and Padma Vibhushan in the year 2023. Hussain was also awarded the highest music honor 'Sangeet Natak Akademi Award' in 1990.
