Zhalay Sarhadi calls out ‘bought’ awards in entertainment industry

Renowned Pakistani actress Zhalay Sarhadi, known for her performances in hit dramas such as Mere Damad, Uraan, Madiha Maliha, Judwaa, Aks, Digest Writer, and Rang Laaga, recently spoke out about the controversial award culture in the entertainment industry. She has also hosted reality shows like Shadi Online on Geo TV and continues to work selectively in television and film. Zhalay is married to Amir Anees, and the couple has a grown-up daughter.

During a recent appearance on the talk show Gup Shab, hosted by Vasay Chaudhary, Zhalay revealed her views on actors receiving consecutive awards and the credibility of such honors. She stated, “I have learned one thing: whatever you want, you should ask for it, even if it is praise or appreciation. If people can beg for awards, anything can be obtained this way. Actors even pay money for awards. I don’t have awards because I can’t pay for them.”

She further explained that many award shows operate on a transactional basis, with nominations and wins sometimes influenced by money rather than merit. “Most awards are sold and then distributed, which is why such awards lack credibility. Award shows should be conducted collectively; it is not credible to give awards only to your own channel,” she added. Zhalay also recounted an incident where a nominated actor did not receive an award simply for missing the ceremony, highlighting flaws in the process.

Earlier, Popular actress Zhalay Sarhadi responded to criticism over her advocacy for animal rights. She clarified that speaking for animals does not mean she ignores human rights. In fact, she emphasized that every social issue deserves attention.

In recent months, Zhalay has focused on the rights of animals and birds. She has shared multiple posts and videos to raise awareness about their welfare. Consequently, some people criticized her, claiming she neglects other important matters.

To address the criticism, Zhalay released a video explaining her perspective. She admitted that animal rights have become her primary focus lately. However, she stressed that focusing on one topic does not diminish her care for other social issues.
