Zimbabwe all out for just 54 runs in second ODI, Afghanistan won the match by record 232 runs
Afghanistan cricket team created history by defeating Zimbabwe by 232 runs in the second ODI match played at Harare Sports Club on Thursday, 19 December. This is also the biggest win in terms of runs in Afghanistan's ODI history. Their previous biggest win came in September 2024, when they defeated South Africa by 177 runs at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium.
Meanwhile, in Harare, chasing 286, Zimbabwe were all out for just 54 runs in 17.5 overs, leaving themselves with an embarrassing record. With this win, Afghanistan has taken a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series while the third and last match of the series is yet to be played. The first match was canceled due to rain.
Talking about this match, Afghanistan's young opener Sediqullah Atal laid the foundation of victory with his first ODI century. Invited to bat first, Afghanistan scored 286 runs for the loss of six wickets. Atal and Abdul Malik made a big partnership of 191 runs for the first wicket in 35 overs and took their team far ahead in the match. Malik was unfortunate that he could not complete his century, he scored 84 runs in 101 balls.
On the other hand, Atal continued playing till the 43rd over, scoring 104 runs in 128 balls with the help of eight fours and four sixes. Hashmatullah Shahidi also added 29 valuable runs. Nyamahuri was the best among the bowlers for Zimbabwe with figures of 10-0-53-3. Trevor Gwandu took two wickets, but during this he also gave away 70 runs.
When Zimbabwe team came to chase the target, they were expected to fight but they were not seen fighting in the match right from the beginning. After Ben Curran was run out for a duck off six balls, Zimbabwe could not muster any momentum. Except Sean Williams and Sikandar Raza, none of the Zimbabwean batsmen could reach double figures. Apart from Curran, Brian Bennett, Gwandu and Tinotenda Maposa were also out for zero. Ghazanfar, who has been selected to play for MI in IPL 2025, took three wickets with figures of 3.5-2-9-3. Zadran also impressed with a spell of 3-1-13-3. Farooqui also took two wickets.
