Zimbabwe stuns Australia by 23 runs in T20 World Cup 2026
In a result that has rocked the cricket world, Zimbabwe pulled off a historic 23-run victory over tournament favourites Australia at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.
The “Giant Killer” defended a competitive total of 169/2, restricting the world number two side to just 146 all out in the final over.
The match turned early during a catastrophic Australian powerplay. Chasing 170, Australia’s top order crumbled to 29/4 within five overs, as Blessing Muzarabani (4/17) and Brad Evans (3/23) tore through the lineup.
Stand-in captain Travis Head admitted the team struggled to adapt, stating, “We lost wickets and put ourselves under pressure, it’s disappointing but that’s the game.”
Despite a fighting 65 from Matt Renshaw, the lack of support proved fatal.

Adding to the drama, fans have criticised the “strange decision” to leave Steve Smith out of the main squad, especially as injuries mount. Smith, currently in Sri Lanka as a reserve, watched from the sidelines as the middle order failed to stabilise.
Meanwhile, Zimbabwe’s celebration was global. Player of the Match Muzarabani called it a “special feeling,” while skipper Sikandar Raza beamed with pride, saying, “the boys wanted it and I think they really did and they deserve to win today.”
Australia now faces a “must-win” scenario against Sri Lanka to keep their campaign alive.
