Zimbabwe vs Sri Lanka T20 World Cup 2026 highlights: ZIM Top Group B
In a thrilling display of grit, Zimbabwe defeated co-host Sri Lanka by six wickets on Thursday to finish the T20 World Cup group stage undefeated.
Playing at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, the “Chevrons” successfully chased down 179 runs with three balls to spare, proving they are no longer just participants but serious contenders.
Sri Lanka posted a competitive 178/7, led by Pathum Nissanka’s solid 62. However, Zimbabwe’s chase was anchored by young opener Brian Bennett, who remained unbeaten on 63.
Despite a late wobble where Raza fell in the 19th over, Tony Munyonga smashed a massive six to start the final over and Bennett hit the winning boundary to seal the historic victory.
This win ensures Zimbabwe enters the Super Eights at the top of Group B, having already shocked Australia earlier in the tournament. Reflecting on the team’s incredible journey, an emotional Sikandar Raza said at the post-match presentation:
“I don’t think anyone gave us a chance to win everyone’s hearts and respect. It is a good position to be in.” He added with a smile, “Everyone loves an underdog story.”
Meanwhile, Sri Lankan captain Dasun Shanaka admitted his side was outplayed, stating, “We need to be more confident in the field, hopefully we come with a better attitude the next time.”
