New Delhi. Indian-origin Democrat leader Zohran Mamdani was sworn in as the new Mayor of New York City on Thursday. Mamdani took the oath by placing his hand on the Quran at a ceremony held in Manhattan’s historic subway station, which had been closed for 80 years, becoming the first Muslim mayor of America’s largest city.

Letitia James administered the oath
Mamdani, 34, was sworn in by New York Attorney General and his political ally Letitia James. The ceremony took place in the old City Hall station, known for its beautiful vaulted ceilings. After taking the oath, Mamdani said that this is the biggest honor and privilege of my life.
Another swearing-in proposed
Another grand swearing-in ceremony of Mamdani is also planned, which will be held at 1 pm (local time) at City Hall. In this ceremony, he will be administered the oath by US Senator Bernie Sanders, whom Mamdani counts among his political idols. This will be followed by a public block party in the ‘Canyon of Heroes’ area of Broadway, famous for its historic ticker-tape parade.
