10 big government benefits for women: From LPG to business loan and free legal help, know which schemes can provide benefits.

However, due to lack of information, many eligible women are not able to avail these benefits. Know here about 10 major government schemes and facilities related to women, the benefits of which can be availed as per the relevant eligibility and rules.

1. Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana

The objective of this scheme is to provide relief to women from poor and eligible families from smoky traditional chulhas. Under this, LPG connections are provided to eligible women. The Government may also provide subsidy on LPG cylinders as per the policy prescribed from time to time.

2. Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana

This is a popular savings scheme to secure the future of daughters. Parents or guardian can open an account in the name of the daughter. In this, savings increase as per the interest rate fixed by the government and in future one can get financial assistance for higher education or marriage.

3. Self Help Group (SHG)

Self-help groups are a medium to connect women with savings, banking and self-employment. Through this, women can take loans at low interest and get training in tailoring, dairy, handicrafts, food processing and other small businesses.

4. Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana

Women who want to start their own business or expand the existing business can apply for loan from the bank under Mudra Scheme as per the eligibility. Loan approval depends on the bank’s process and eligibility.

5. Maternity Benefit

Eligible women working in the organized sector can get maternity leave and other facilities under the Maternity Benefit Act. Its purpose is to ensure the safety of the health of the mother and the newborn baby.

6. Safety at Workplace (POSH Act)

POSH law is in place to protect women from sexual harassment at the workplace. Under this, Internal Complaint Committee (ICC) is formed in institutions, where women can lodge complaints.

7. Jan Dhan Account and DBT

If a woman is an eligible beneficiary of any government scheme, the assistance amount can be sent directly to her bank account through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). For this, it is necessary to have updated bank account and necessary documents.

8. Skill Development Program

The government provides training to women in tailoring, computers, digital marketing, beauty and wellness, food processing, handicrafts and other fields through various skill development schemes, thereby increasing employment and self-employment opportunities.

9. Women Welfare Schemes of State Governments

Different schemes are operated for women in different states. These may include facilities like financial assistance, scholarships, self-employment, health services, skill development and social security. Their rules and eligibility vary state-wise.

10. Free legal aid

Eligible women can get free legal aid under the Legal Services Authorities Act. In cases of domestic violence, dowry harassment, maintenance, property disputes or other matters, assistance can be sought from the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA).

Beware of misleading claims

Many misleading claims keep going viral on social media in the name of sending money to women’s accounts or new government schemes. Before availing the benefits of any scheme, verify its information only from the government website, concerned department, public service center or authorized portal. Do not share confidential information related to OTP, bank account or Aadhaar with any unknown person.
