$100,000 invested in school hygiene facilities in Son La

The two organizations broke ground on a new sanitation facility at the Khuong Tien branch of Chieng Khuong Primary School in Chieng Khuong Commune on May 21. The project is part of a broader initiative covering 10 school sites across Son La, including locations in Muong Lam, Huoi Mot, Muong Hung, and Bo Sinh communes.

At the Khuong Tien branch, 144 students currently rely on temporary toilet facilities.

Lo Thi Ha, a teacher at Chieng Khuong Primary School, said the existing restroom was built about seven years ago using salvaged materials donated by local residents. The structure lacks proper toilet fixtures, requiring users to stand on bricks.

“We hope the new facility will be completed soon so our students can study in better conditions,” Ha said.

Ca Thi Trang, a student at the school, said she hopes the new facility will provide a cleaner and more comfortable environment.

“I want the new toilet to be clean, have proper doors, and be free of unpleasant odors so students can use it comfortably,” she said.

The project aims to improve learning conditions in mountainous and disadvantaged areas by constructing 10 permanent sanitation facilities that meet standards set by Vietnam’s Ministry of Education and Training.

The total investment exceeds VND3 billion (US$113,900), of which Hope Foundation and Opella Vietnam are contributing more than VND2.6 billion ($98,700). The remainder will be funded by local authorities.

Each facility will include six to 12 toilet compartments, with separate areas for boys and girls. Construction is expected to be completed before the start of the 2026-2027 academic year.

In addition to infrastructure improvements, the project will provide hygiene education activities for students, specialized training for teachers, and instructional materials designed to encourage healthy sanitation habits from an early age.

Bui Thuy Trang, Head of Communications at Opella Vietnam, said the company has partnered with Hope Foundation on community projects for the past five years.

“We believe community health begins with meeting basic needs, especially for children in disadvantaged areas,” Trang said.
