Chidambaram Was Against Buying Gold: When PM Modi urged the countrymen not to buy gold, Rahul Gandhi took aim, but Chidambaram, the Finance Minister of the UPA government, had also made the same appeal.
New Delhi. Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi has targeted PM Modi’s request to the countrymen not to buy gold, not to travel abroad and work from home. Rahul Gandhi has described PM Modi as ‘compromised’ on these appeals, but Rahul Gandhi probably forgot that even during the Congress’s UPA government, in the year 2013, the then Finance Minister P. Chidambaram had appealed to the countrymen not to buy gold.

According to the news of The Times of India on June 13, 2013, P. Chidambaram had appealed to the countrymen to stop buying gold and said that not even an ounce of gold is produced in India. You pay in rupees, but the government has to spend dollars to buy gold. As Finance Minister of the UPA government, P. Chidambaram had said that he does not buy gold. Chidambaram had also said that it is wrong to think that gold is the safest investment. P. Chidambaram had also said that procurement of crude oil, natural gas and fertilizers is a matter of main concern for the government.

In fact, PM Modi had urged the countrymen in a public meeting in Secunderabad, Telangana on Sunday that the Iran war has brought a big crisis. In such a situation, they should not buy gold for a year, do not go abroad for a year or get married, do car pooling or travel by metro trains in the cities. PM Modi had advised to work from home like during the Corona period. Also, an appeal was made to the farmers to promote the use of natural fertilizers instead of chemical fertilizers. In fact, dollars have to be paid to the government on purchase of gold, foreign travel, purchase of crude oil and natural gas and purchase of chemical fertilizers. Due to which the foreign exchange reserves are affected. Besides, current account deficit also increases.
