Plastic Currency Notes: Now plastic notes will be visible in your purse, know when will RBI bring them and what will be the special feature?

Mumbai In the coming time, plastic notes will be seen in your purse. Soon the Reserve Bank (RBI) is going to introduce plastic currency notes. RBI has invited tender to supply polymer substrate sheets required for making plastic notes. It has been said in the tender that proposals in this regard will have to be sent to the Chief General Manager of Reserve Bank of India Notes Private Limited, Bengaluru by August 18, 2026. Earlier, RBI had introduced Rs 10 notes made of plastic under the pilot project. After receiving good feedback, now preparations have been made to make all the notes from plastic only.

Till now notes are printed on special paper made of cotton. This paper has to be imported from abroad. Besides, its ink also comes from abroad. Criminals also make counterfeit copies of paper notes. Besides, there is also the problem of them bursting and melting after getting wet in water. Due to which every year RBI has to spend a lot of money on printing notes. If notes are made from plastic, there will be no possibility of them getting cut, torn or melted. Also, they can be made very safe with special windows and advanced holographic. By introducing plastic notes, the problem of fake notes will also be curbed.
