New Delhi. The final report of the three-member committee constituted to investigate the case of recovery of burnt cash from the house of Justice Yashwant Verma was presented in the Lok Sabha today. The inquiry committee has found the allegations against Justice Verma to be true. It is clearly stated in the report that regarding the huge amount of currency which was recovered from the storeroom of Justice Verma's government residence at 30, Tughlaq Crescent in Delhi, he could not give any satisfactory answer as to where it had come from. Also he was seen avoiding questions. According to the investigation committee, the allegations of tampering with the goods kept in the storeroom before sealing and inspection have been found to be true. However, it is not clear whether Justice Verma himself removed the notes. Justice Verma had claimed that he had no knowledge about the currency and that the notes were kept as part of a conspiracy, but he could not prove it. The inquiry committee did not consider Justice Verma's explanation satisfactory.
Justice Verma had sent his resignation to President Draupadi Murmu in April this year. The then Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Sanjeev Khanna had formed an in-house inquiry committee after this matter came to light. On the basis of the report of this committee, impeachment action was recommended against Justice Verma. After this, the impeachment motion against Justice Verma was initiated by the government in the Parliament. Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, while approving the impeachment motion, had constituted a three-member inquiry committee. Supreme Court Justice Arvind Kumar, Madras High Court Chief Justice MM Srivastava and Karnataka High Court senior advocate Vasudev Acharya were entrusted with the responsibility of investigation. Whereas ASG Raja Thackeray was given the responsibility of assisting the investigation committee.
Justice Verma had approached the Supreme Court challenging the parliamentary committee formed to investigate the impeachment case, but he did not get any relief from there. Let us remind you that at the time of Holi in 2025, a fire broke out in the government residence of Justice Yashwant Verma in Delhi. Fire fighters reached his house and extinguished the fire and during this time, a large number of bundles of Rs 500 notes were found burnt in a storeroom. Then this matter came to light.
