New Delhi. Supreme Court Justice Sandeep Mehta has written a letter to Chief Justice of India Justice Surya Kant in which he has demanded the immediate removal of Acting Chief Justice of Rajasthan High Court Sanjeev Prakash Sharma from the post. According to Justice Mehta, his powers are being misused by Acting Chief Justice Sharma of Rajasthan High Court. Justice Mehta told the CJI that he has received many such complaints, which prima facie raise questions on the honesty of Justice Sanjeev Prakash Sharma.
Justice Mehta also wrote in his letter that when he went on his tour to Rajasthan, many judges of the Rajasthan High Court met him. During that time, those judges had filed a complaint regarding the behavior of Justice Sharma. According to him, Justice Sharma often tells his fellow judges that he is close to the Chief Justice of India and at the same time keeps threatening the judges with action like transfer. Justice Sandeep Mehta had earlier written letters to Chief Justice Surya Kant on August 2, August 10 and August 17. Justice Mehta asked why Justice Sharma was being allowed to continue as the acting Chief Justice of the High Court.
Justice Sharma was promoted to the Rajasthan High Court in November 2016. After this, he was transferred to Patna High Court in 2022. In March 2023, Justice Sharma had appealed to return to the Rajasthan High Court citing health reasons, which was rejected by the Supreme Court Collegium. However, in May 2026, the Supreme Court Collegium had approved sending Justice Sharma back to the Rajasthan High Court. Justice Sharma is going to retire from his post next month on 26th September.
