Opposition questions on delimitation bill, Amit Shah attacks SP
As soon as the bill was introduced in the House, the opposition started strongly opposing it. Congress leader KC Venugopal was the first to protest, after which an uproar started in the House. Earlier at the beginning of the session, the House expressed grief over the demise of famous singer Asha Bhosle.
Samajwadi Party also took a tough stand regarding the delimitation bill. SP MP Dharmendra Yadav said that Parliament has been given the responsibility to protect the Constitution, but this bill is against the spirit of the Constitution. He alleged that separating delimitation from census was wrong and would affect the constitutional framework.
Dharmendra Yadav also said that Samajwadi Party has always been ahead in the interest of women and demanded from the government to withdraw this constitutional amendment and delimitation bill.
While supporting the women’s reservation bill, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav questioned the government as to why it is being done in such a hurry. He asked why the government is not conducting the census. On this, Union Home Minister Amit Shah replied that the census work has started.
Responding to Dharmendra Yadav’s statement, Amit Shah said that he is saying that there is no column in it, whereas he should understand that at present the houses are being counted and not their caste. He sarcastically said that if Samajwadi Party gets a chance, it should decide the caste of the houses also.
The Union Home Minister also said that Dharmendra Yadav’s talk about giving reservation to Muslim women is unconstitutional, because reservation on the basis of religion is not allowed in the Constitution.
On this, Akhilesh Yadav raised the question whether Muslim women are not part of half the population. In response to this, Amit Shah said that if Samajwadi Party wants, it can give all its tickets to Muslim women, he has no objection to it.
