Preparations to speed up Bullet Train projects, 7 new corridors will be implemented in mission mode.
Indian Railways has taken a big step to rapidly expand the high-speed rail network in the country. The government has decided to implement seven new bullet train projects in mission mode to reduce delays in approvals and land acquisition.
This step of the Railways has been taken under the schemes announced by the Narendra Modi government in the Budget 2026-27. These projects will be developed as growth connectors, including key corridors such as Mumbai–Pune, Pune–Hyderabad, Hyderabad–Bengaluru, Hyderabad–Chennai, Chennai–Bengaluru, Delhi–Varanasi and Varanasi–Siliguri (further extended to Guwahati).
A senior government official said, “The bullet train corridor will be given top priority in getting approval at the government level.” He also said that for these projects, arrangements will be made to take approvals simultaneously at the central, state and local levels, which will speed up the processes.
Railways will form special teams for these projects, which will quickly resolve the issues related to land acquisition and right-of-way in coordination with the concerned states. In this direction, coordination meetings with the states are likely to start soon.
The government has taken this decision in view of the delay in the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail Corridor, the country’s first bullet train project. The cost of the project has increased to about ₹1.98 lakh crore, which is much higher than the initial estimate of ₹1.08 lakh crore. The main reason for the delay has been said to be obstacles in land acquisition.
To complete new projects in a timely manner, Railways will standardize designs, which will speed up the construction process and also reduce costs. Apart from this, pre-cast technology will be used extensively in civil works, so that construction work can be completed faster.
Railways also aims to promote domestic manufacturing through these projects. In this sequence, there is a plan to start the indigenous B28 bullet train on the Surat–Vapi section of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor by August 2027. Railway officials believe that standardization, modern construction techniques and faster approval process will not only increase the speed of projects, but also help in cost control and strengthen the “Make in India” initiative.
This move of the government clearly signals that high-speed rail network in India is being developed as a national priority and different parts of the country will be connected with high-speed connectivity in the coming years.
