Policeman in Mumbai becomes victim of cyber fraud, Rs 1.60 lakh missing in auto update!
In Mumbai, cyber criminals hacked the mobile phone of a constable posted at CSMT Railway Police Station and withdrew Rs 1.60 lakh from his bank accounts. In this matter, CSMT Railway Police has registered a case against unknown accused and started investigation.
The incident happened when the policeman was returning home by local train after finishing his duty and suddenly his mobile phone started updating automatically.
Havildar Jibhau Ratan Lahire (47), resident of Khadakpada area of Kalyan West, is currently posted at CSMT Railway Police Station. Havildar told that after the end of duty, at around 9:12 in the morning, he along with a colleague officer sat in the first class compartment of Titwala local train from CSMT.
The mobile was neither switching off nor working normally. After reaching Kalyan station, he went to a familiar mobile shop, where after deleting some apps, the phone became normal.
When he became suspicious after reaching home, he checked the balance of Google Pay and bank accounts. Investigation revealed that Rs 95 thousand were first transferred from his bank account to his other bank account and then from there to the account of a person named Golu Meena. Apart from this, Rs 65 thousand was also transferred from his another bank account to the account of a person named Arjan Bharat Manikwade. In this way a total fraud of Rs 1 lakh 60 thousand took place.
In the preliminary investigation, it is suspected that cyber thugs had taken control of the mobile phone through some malware or remote access technology. The device was controlled by pretending that the phone was updated and the amount was transferred through Google Pay.
On the complaint of the victim policeman, a case has been registered against unknown cyber criminals including the concerned account holders Arjan Bharat Manikwade and Golu Meena. Police are now examining bank accounts, mobile IP logs, transaction details and device data.
