Modi offered prayers at Thanthania Kalibari during the road show!

Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached Kolkata on Sunday to campaign in the West Bengal Assembly elections. He took blessings of Maa Kali at Thanthania Kalibari. Thanthania Kalibari is one of the oldest Kali temples in Kolkata.

The program of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit this temple and offer prayers during the road show was already fixed. The Prime Minister reached the temple while doing a road show. After this, he reached the temple with flowers and garlands, had darshan and after leaving the temple, he again joined the road show.

After visiting the temple, PM Modi shared the video on social media platform X and wrote that in Kolkata, I prayed at Thanthania Kalibari. This ancient temple has a deep connection with Bengali culture and Kolkata in particular. It also has a deep association with Sri Ramakrishna, who often came here to pray. He further wrote that I prayed for the prosperity, good health and happiness of the people of India.

Thanthania Kalibari Temple was established in the year 1703. Its history of more than 300 years is believed to be even before the formal development of the city of Kolkata. In this temple, Mother Kali is worshiped as ‘Maa Siddheshwari’. The goddess seated here is considered ‘Jagrut’.

It is believed that Ramakrishna Paramhansa used to visit this temple often and sing hymns in devotion to Mother Siddheshwari. Inside the temple, one of his lines is still inscribed on the walls, ‘Shankarer Hridaya Majhe, Kali Biraje’, which means ‘Mother Kali resides in Shankar’s heart.’

This is one of the few Kali temples in India where non-vegetarian offerings are made to Maa Kali. It is said that this tradition was started by Ramakrishna Paramahamsa.

It is said that he had offered ‘Dab-Chingadi’ (coconut and prawn) to Mother Siddheshwari and prayed for the speedy recovery of Brahmanand Keshav Chandra Sen.

From that very day, the tradition of offering non-vegetarian Prasad to Maa Kali started, which continues even today. It is also said that when Ramakrishna Paramahamsa fell ill in Shyampukur, his followers prayed to Maa Siddheshwari for his speedy recovery and offered non-vegetarian offerings to the goddess.
