Stir before elections: Election Commission transfers Joint BDO of Falta
Just before the second and final phase of assembly elections in West Bengal, a major change has been seen at the administrative level. The Election Commission of India (ECI) has transferred Saurav Hazra, Joint Block Development Officer (BDO) of Falta Block in South 24 Parganas district, with immediate effect. The step was taken after the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) protested against the regional activities of Special Police Supervisor Ajay Pal Sharma.
According to an Election Commission official, Saurav Hazra has been removed from Falta and given new posting in Purulia. Ramya Bhattacharya has been appointed in his place. The official called it a routine administrative process, however, the timing of this decision is considered important from the political point of view as voting for 245 seats is to be held on April 29.
Along with this, in another order, the Commission has also removed Additional District Magistrate (ADM) of South 24 Parganas Bhaskar Pal and ADM of Birbhum Souvik Bhattacharya from all election responsibilities. However, in both these cases the reason has not been clarified.
Saurav Hazra’s transfer has taken place at a time when voting is to be held on 142 seats of West Bengal second phase. Hazra is accused of not cooperating with EC’s appointed police observer Ajay Pal Sharma. Sharma faced opposition from TMC workers while visiting the house of TMC candidate Jahangir Khan and his associates in the area since Monday night.
IPS Sharma is known as ‘Singham’ in Prayagraj due to his strict working style, while before the elections he was seen in a viral video warning the goons of the TMC party. There he gave a strong warning to the goons who intimidate the voters.
The situation became more tense on Tuesday (April 28) when Sharma conducted route marches in sensitive areas and conducted search operations against possible troublemakers. During this, TMC supporters demonstrated against him and raised slogans like ‘Go Back’ and ‘Jai Bangla’.
Falta assembly seat falls under the Diamond Harbor Lok Sabha constituency and is represented by senior TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee, and the area is considered a sensitive area. A large number of central security forces have been deployed here to ensure fair voting.
TMC has accused Ajay Pal Sharma of acting beyond his limits and intimidating party workers. Meanwhile, in a video, Sharma is also seen warning potential miscreants of appropriate action.
