Clash between BJP-TMC workers during counting of votes in West Bengal
As soon as the election results of five states came out, it became clear that the political equations in West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Kerala have completely changed. Meanwhile, clashes broke out between BJP and Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers at several centers during the counting of votes for the West Bengal Assembly elections.
The clash took place at Rashtraguru Surendranath counting center in Barrackpore in North 24 Parganas district. Security forces reached the spot and intervened and brought the situation under control. In Cooch Behar’s Dinhata area too, central forces had to resort to lathicharge to disperse the crowd and maintain peace following clashes between Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers.
Jalpaiguri Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Anjali Singh said that the situation in Cooch Behar is currently under control. “The situation is calm and law and order is maintained. There is no disturbance of any kind and there is no possibility of it… Police is fully prepared to deal with any situation,” he said.
Similar tension was seen in Asansol, where BJP workers were accused of vandalizing the TMC booth camp. After the clash near the counting centre, the security personnel resorted to lathicharge. “Those responsible for the vandalism are being identified,” said Pranav Kumar, commissioner of Asansol-Durgapur police commissionerate.
Amid preparations to form the BJP government in West Bengal, the administration has deployed tight security at all counting centers to prevent any tension during the crucial counting process.
