The full sequence of the incident is not yet clear, but it comes amid heightened political tension following the recently announced election results in West Bengal. Responding to this, Mahua Moitra raised questions on the role of the ruling party by sharing the video of the incident on Twitter. He wrote, “Kolkata’s historic new market. Bengalis celebrating change,” which was a jibe at the BJP’s election slogan. TMC has also said that it will oppose such actions, calling it a part of ‘bulldozer politics’.
At the same time, some local residents and businessmen reject these allegations and say that this building was built illegally. He claims, “It was an illegal construction. This space was first forcibly taken over from a shopkeeper and later converted into a union office.”
