After The Betrayal In The Assembly Elections The DMK Withdrew From The Indi Alliance In The Lok Sabha
DMK has also taken a big decision at the national level after being allegedly ‘stabbed in the back’ by Congress in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Congress contested the elections riding on the back of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and now after the results supported TVK, after which DMK has officially moved towards separating from the INDI alliance. Party MP Kanimozhi Karunanidhi has written a letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, demanding separate seating arrangements for DMK MPs in the House.
In his letter, Kanimozhi said that after the changed political circumstances of Tamil Nadu and the end of the alliance with Congress, it is no longer appropriate for DMK MPs to sit with Congress MPs. He requested the Lok Sabha Speaker to make separate seating arrangements for DMK MPs so that they can effectively discharge their responsibilities in the House.
No party got a clear majority in the 234-member assembly. Actor-turned-politician Joseph Vijay’s party TVK emerged as the largest party with 108 seats, but fell 10 seats short of the majority mark. Whereas DMK led by MK Stalin won 59 seats, Congress won 5, AIADMK won 47 and BJP won 1 seat.
The biggest political upset after the elections happened when Congress decided to support TVK, breaking its long-standing alliance with DMK. After this step of Congress, TVK staked claim to form the government before the Governor. However, due to lack of sufficient majority in the initial phase, government formation could not be approved.
DMK leaders termed Congress’s decision as betrayal and political opportunism. The party alleges that despite being together for years at the national and state level, the Congress left the DMK as soon as the power equation changed.
The alliance of DMK and Congress had been going on in Tamil Nadu since the late 1960s. Both the parties had been together in many elections and coalition governments. In recent years this partnership was also a key part of the INDI coalition at the national level. Although tension had started increasing between the two parties regarding seat sharing in 2026, DMK considered Congress’s alliance with TVK after the election results as the final reason for the break in relations.

Congress leaders defended their decision, saying they had respected the mandate and supported a new secular front. DMK, on the other hand, says that the party paid a political price by staying with the Congress for years, but in return it got betrayed.
The changing politics of Tamil Nadu has now raised questions on the unity of the national opposition alliance. Political analysts believe that this rift in the relations between DMK and Congress can affect the opposition strategy in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
