Kolkata: Bharatiya Janata Party leader Suvendu Adhikari on Friday outlined his vision for West Bengal after being elected leader of the BJP legislature party, clearing the path for him to become the state’s first BJP Chief Minister.
Addressing party MLAs and supporters in Kolkata, Adhikari said Bengal would move towards a politics based on trust and governance. He assured people that fear would no longer dominate public life in the state.
“As long as I am alive, Bengal does not need to fear,” he said while addressing the gathering after the legislature party meeting.

Focus on Governance and BJP Policies
Adhikari said his government would focus more on performance than rhetoric and pledged to strictly follow the BJP’s policies. He also promised to fulfill all assurances made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the election campaign.
According to him, cooperation between the Center and the state government would play a key role in accelerating Bengal’s development. He said the new administration would work systematically to implement promises made in the BJP manifesto.
The BJP leader also praised Union Home Minister Amit Shah during his speech and described him as a key strategist behind the party’s expansion in the state.
Corruption and Women’s Safety Under Scanner
One of the major announcements made by Adhikari was the formation of inquiry commissions to investigate alleged corruption and crimes against women during the previous Trinamool Congress government.
He said a commission headed by a retired judge would examine corruption allegations, while separate probes would look into incidents involving atrocities against women. Adhikari asserted that those found guilty would face action under the law.

Earlier in the day, Union Home Minister Amit Shah formally announced Suvendu Adhikari as the BJP legislature party leader during a meeting in Kolkata attended by newly elected MLAs.
The BJP secured a historic victory in the West Bengal Assembly elections, ending the Trinamool Congress’ long rule in the state. Adhikari’s elevation is being viewed as a major political moment for the BJP in eastern India. He is scheduled to take oath as Chief Minister on May 9, which also marks the birth anniversary of Nobel laureate. Rabindranath Tagore.
