Suvendu Adhikari took oath as CM, this has been his political journey!
A historic chapter was added to the politics of West Bengal on Saturday, when the Bharatiya Janata Party government came to power for the first time and Suvendu Adhikari took oath as the Chief Minister of the state. In a grand ceremony held in Kolkata, West Bengal Governor RN Ravi administered the oath of office and secrecy to Suvendu Adhikari and five other ministers.
The leaders who took oath as ministers along with Suvendu Adhikari include Dilip Ghosh, Agnimitra Paul, Ashok Kirtania, Kshudiram Tudu and Nisith Pramanik. With this historic victory of BJP, for the first time a right-wing party has formed a government in the state.
On May 8, the BJP legislature party unanimously elected Suvendu Adhikari as its leader. After this it was decided that he would become the Chief Minister. BJP captured power in the state by registering a landslide victory in the assembly elections.
Suvendu Adhikari’s political journey has been more than three decades long. He started politics in 1995 as a councilor from Kanthi Municipality. After this he was a councilor thrice and also became the chairman of Kanthi Municipality. He has more than 20 years of legislative experience. He was a Lok Sabha MP twice, an MLA thrice and also the Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Assembly for five years.
While in the state government, he handled important ministries like transport and irrigation. Apart from this, he was also the Chairman of Hooghly River Bridge Commission. As Chairman of Haldia Development Authority, he played an important role in the development of the industrial city of Haldia. He has also made a big contribution in the cooperative movement. He has been the chairman of Agricultural Rural Bank, Kanthi Urban Cooperative and Vidyasagar Central Cooperative Bank.
Suvendu Adhikari’s family has also been associated with the freedom movement. Bipin Adhikari and Kenaram Adhikari of the famous Adhikari family of Kanthi were close associates of many freedom fighters of Bengal. Bipin Adhikari was jailed by the British and the Adhikari family house was burnt twice during British rule.
Born on 15 December 1970 in Karkuli village of East Medinipur district of West Bengal, Suvendu Adhikari did M.A. from Rabindra Bharati University. Have studied. He is the son of former Union Minister of State Shishir Adhikari and is currently unmarried.
Suvendu Adhikari was one of the prominent faces of the 2007 Nandigram movement, which played a key role in ending the 34-year-old Left Front rule. He remained in Trinamool Congress for a long time and was also a minister in the Mamata Banerjee government till 2020. In December 2020, he joined BJP in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
He is also called the ‘Giant Killer’ as he achieved big political victories by defeating Mamata Banerjee on Nandigram seat in 2021 and Bhawanipur seat in 2026.
