Split In Aiadmk Mlas Of Shanmugam Faction Come Out In Support Of Vijay Government

At least 30 MLAs, led by senior AIADMK leader CV Shanmugam, have announced their support to the Tamilaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK) government led by Chief Minister Joseph Vijay. However, Shanmugam clarified that his aim is not to break AIADMK, but to save the basic principles of the party.

In a press conference held in Chennai, Shanmugam said that many party MLAs are angry with the news of possible alliance of DMK and AIADMK. He claimed that AIADMK chief Edappadi K. Palaniswami was reportedly planning to become Chief Minister with the support of DMK, but most of the MLAs did not accept the proposal.

Shanmugam said, “The mandate has clearly been given to make Vijay the Chief Minister. That is the most important thing that we have to understand. The public has decided to make Vijay the Chief Minister and we respect that mandate. So we heartily congratulate Chief Minister Vijay and on behalf of the AIADMK legislature party extend full support to the TVK government.”

Out of 234 seats in Tamil Nadu Assembly, AIADMK could win only 47 seats this time. Earlier in the 2021 assembly elections also, the party had lost power to the DMK alliance and got only 75 seats. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the party could win only one seat out of 39 and could not even open its account in the 2024 parliamentary elections.

Shanmugam said that after consecutive election defeats there is a need for introspection within the party. He said that the MLAs have demanded the party general secretary to call a meeting of the General Council so that the reasons for the defeat can be discussed. He said, “We had to face defeat in the recently held elections. Not only in this election, but in the last election also we had lost. We have asked the party leadership to call a meeting to discuss the reasons for the defeat and take necessary steps for the future of the party.”

Shanmugam described the possible alliance with DMK as against the ideology of the party. He said, “AIADMK was founded by MG Ramachandran with the aim of eliminating DMK. We consider DMK to be an evil force in Tamil Nadu. If AIADMK forms an alliance with DMK, the party will be completely wiped out in the future.”

He reiterated that the legislature party and party workers are against any kind of alliance with the DMK and that is why a resolution was passed in the legislature party meeting against it.

This development is being considered as a big blow for the AIADMK which has been struggling since the death of late Chief Minister Jayalalitha. Political analysts believe that Shanmugam faction’s support to the TVK government could change the balance of power in the state’s politics.

Meanwhile, Shanmugam announced that the AIADMK legislature party has elected SP Velumani as the legislature party leader and G Hari as its deputy leader. With this new support received by Vijay Sarkar, its position in the Assembly seems to be getting stronger.
