To do Surya Mudra, the ring finger is bent and lightly pressed with the thumb and the rest of the fingers are kept straight. In yoga, the ring finger is associated with the earth element, while the thumb is considered a symbol of the fire element. When the thumb puts pressure on the ring finger, heat increases in the body and heaviness starts reducing.

Yoga experts believe that this helps in reducing the phlegm accumulated in the body. In case of asthma, there is swelling in the respiratory tubes and phlegm starts accumulating. Due to this the patient has difficulty in breathing.

Surya Mudra helps in reducing phlegm by increasing heat in the body. It also improves the flow of oxygen in the body. When the right amount of oxygen reaches the lungs, there is relief in breathing.
