Three IPS officers suspended in RG Kar case
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Friday (May 15) announced the death anniversary of the year 2024. Yes. Announced suspension of three IPS officers over alleged irregularities in the Kar Medical College rape and murder case. At a press conference held at the state secretariat Nabanna, Subhendu Adhikari said Vineet Goyal, former Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Abhishek Gupta and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Indira Mukherjee have been suspended.
He alleged that these officers were involved in serious errors in functioning, including attempting to bribe the victim’s family and holding a press conference without written permission. The Chief Minister said that now departmental action will be initiated against these three officers.
Suvendu Adhikari further said that the superintendent of Presidency Correctional Home has also been suspended following allegations that mobile phones and SIM cards were recovered from the jail premises. Two other jail officials have also been suspended in this case.
He said, “There was an atmosphere of anarchy everywhere in Bengal and we have started taking action. We had received information that smartphones were being used in Kolkata’s Presidency Jail. After investigation, these allegations were found to be true.”
According to the information, the investigation into how the banned items reached inside the jail despite strict surveillance can be handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). It will also be investigated whether there was any lapse in security or any internal collusion in the smuggling of mobile phones and SIM cards inside the jail.
R. Yes. The tax case is of 9 August 2024, when R. Yes. A junior doctor was found dead in a seminar hall of Kar Medical College and Hospital. Investigation revealed that she was raped. This incident had created outrage across the country.
In this case, 33-year-old civic volunteer and TMC party worker Sanjay Roy was arrested by Kolkata Police on charges of rape and murder. The failure and incompetence of the police in this case created a huge crowd. After increasing public pressure and allegations of irregularities in the initial investigation, the case was handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
In January 2025, the Sessions Court convicted Sanjay Roy and sentenced him to life imprisonment. However, the victim’s family has consistently claimed that he was not the only accused in the crime and that several important aspects of the case were not properly investigated.
In April this year, the victim’s family moved the Calcutta High Court. The family alleges that both the state police and the CBI failed to investigate several crucial pieces of evidence. He also cited the opinion of a forensic expert, which suggested the possibility of presence of multiple people at the scene.
The victim’s mother contested the Bengal Assembly elections from Panihati on Bharatiya Janata Party ticket and won, she also continued to raise the demand for justice. Also, before the assembly elections, R. Yes. Providing justice to the tax victim was one of the major election promises of the BJP.
