Party’s image tarnished by corruption; Trinamool MP resigns from the post of District President
An important development has come to light in the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) amid the ongoing introspection after the party’s poor performance in the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections. Barasat MP Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar has resigned from the post of Barasat organizational district president of the party.
Senior Trinamool leader and long-time party associate Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar submitted her resignation by sending a formal letter to the party’s state president Subrata Bakshi. This step has been taken just days after he was removed from the post of Lok Sabha Chief Whip of TMC and Kalyan Banerjee was appointed in his place.
In a letter to party president Subrata Bakshi, he said that due to increasing criminal incidents and corruption in the state, questions and doubts are arising in the minds of the general public. He wrote, “To further strengthen our democracy, it is necessary to give more importance to transparency, accountability, responsibility, propriety, sense of duty towards the public and moral values in politics.”
Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar also accepted moral responsibility for the party’s disappointing performance in Barasat area. Despite being the party’s traditional stronghold, Trinamool could win only limited seats here.
He appealed to party chief Mamata Banerjee to rely on experienced and dedicated party workers instead of relying on temporary organisations. She wrote, “I appeal to our leader Mamata Banerjee that if you work with honest, dedicated and experienced party workers like before, the image of the party will definitely improve. I do not believe that the difficult task of effective governance can be accomplished with the help of temporary organizations.”
Although he did not take the name directly in the letter, he was referring to the party’s political advisory body I-PAC, which he described as an organization that would disappear overnight.
Speaking to the media after announcing his resignation, Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar raised serious questions on the role of I-PAC during the assembly election campaign. He alleged that this agency weakened the organizational structure of the party. She said that many of the I-PAC workers were very young, lacked experience and political understanding, yet they were given important responsibilities during the elections, which they could not accept.
He also claimed that I-PAC had threatened him before the elections. When asked whether his letter referred to I-PAC, he clearly said, “If there is anyone at the root of this destruction, it is this organization. It has completely ruined everything.”
Commenting on the current situation of the party, Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar said, “There is a need to raise voice against this opaqueness, this sham and institutional corruption spread at every level. Some concrete action should be taken. Corruption has happened at every level. The middle class does not accept this corruption and the general public also does not approve of this behaviour. The arrogance that has come among the leaders and workers is also not acceptable to the people.”
