North Korea again fired ballistic missiles
North Korea has fired several missiles, including at least one short-range ballistic missile, toward the sea near its west coast. This incident has once again increased tension in the area. South Korea’s military said on Tuesday (May 26) that North Korea launched several missiles, including a short-range ballistic missile, toward the sea near its west coast.
South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement that the missiles were fired from the Cheongju area of North Korea’s North Pyongan province at around 1 p.m. (0400 GMT). This is North Korea’s first known missile launch since April 19. That day also the country tested several short-range ballistic missiles, which were reportedly fitted with cluster bombs.
In early April, Pyongyang claimed to have successfully tested a new cluster-bomb warhead and an electromagnetic warhead for a ballistic missile. According to analysts, this is part of North Korea’s efforts to demonstrate modern warfare capability.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said in March that his country’s status as a nuclear weapon is irreversible and that further strengthening self-defense-based nuclear deterrence is necessary for national security.
Although the US has imposed several sanctions on North Korea’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs since 2006, in recent years the country has stepped up efforts to rapidly increase its weapons stockpile under the leadership of Kim Jong Un. These activities have been strongly criticized and condemned by South Korea, Japan, and the United States.
