Who did Mamata Banerjee call ‘dirty religion’ to satisfy Muslim voters?

A political and social controversy has arisen in West Bengal over a controversial statement by Mamata Banerjee. In a video going viral on social media, Mamata Banerjee is seen commenting by calling it ‘dirty religion’ while giving a speech from the open stage during a religious program in front of the Muslim vote bank. Her statement has been accused of insulting Sanatan Dharma.

In the viral video, Mamata Banerjee is heard saying, “We do not believe in the ‘dirty religion’ that this Jumla party deliberately created.” Now demands for legal action have started rising regarding this statement.

A written complaint has been lodged in this matter at Siliguri Cyber Crime Police Station. The complaint has been given by Rinki Chatterjee Singh, advocate of Jalpaiguri Circuit Bench of Calcutta High Court.

The complaint alleges that Mamata Banerjee made statements that disturbed communal harmony during the election campaign and made derogatory remarks on Sanatan Dharma from a religious platform, which has hurt the religious sentiments of the Hindu community.

The complainant says that this statement was made publicly from the platform of a particular religious community, where the people present also supported him. In the viral video, many people are seen standing around Mamata Banerjee on the stage and are seen agreeing with her statement.

Another issue being raised regarding the video is that a police officer was reportedly present on the stage, but no one objected to the statement. Questions are being raised regarding this also on social media.

Advocate Rinki Chatterjee Singh has demanded in his complaint that an FIR should be registered against Mamata Banerjee and an impartial investigation should be conducted into the matter. The complaint states that derogatory comments against other religions from the platform of any religion can increase social tension.

However, till now no official response has come from Mamata Banerjee or her party on this entire controversy. It is also not clear which date and which event the viral video is from. The police has not yet confirmed that FIR has been registered.

This matter has increasingly become a topic of discussion in political circles. Opposition parties are targeting Trinamool Congress over this statement, while supporters say that the statement is being presented out of context.

At present, the matter is in the cognizance of the police and on the basis of the complaint, further legal process is being monitored.
