CDS General Anil Chauhan released ‘Joint Air Defense Doctrine’; India’s new joint air defense policy

Giving a new direction to India’s military modernization process, Chief of Defense Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan has issued a new Joint Air Defense Doctrine. This important military document released in New Delhi is being considered as a major step towards joint operational capability and better coordination among the Indian Armed Forces.

Sharing the information on social media platform X, Headquarters Integrated Defense Staff described it as an important achievement in the development of India’s defense infrastructure. The new doctrine aims to further strengthen the country’s multi-layered air defense system to effectively counter the changing battlefield and emerging threats.

According to defense experts, this document will play an important role in operating the air defense resources of the Army, Navy and Air Force in an integrated structure. Through this, better coordination will be established in information sharing, strategic planning and operations between the three armies.

This initiative is considered to be a sequel to the efforts made by General Anil Chauhan to promote joint military operations. Earlier in August 2025, he had issued Joint Doctrine for Special Forces Operations and Joint Doctrine for Airborne and Heliborne Operations. Both these documents were released during the Tri Service Seminar organized at the Army War College, Mhow, Madhya Pradesh.

The new Joint Air Defense Doctrine is considered particularly important as the nature of air threats in modern wars is rapidly changing. The need for fast response capabilities and joint command structure is greater than ever amid emerging threats such as stand-off weapons, drones, autonomous systems and hypersonic missiles.

The doctrine places special emphasis on the fact that the air defense system should not be a mere collection of equipment but should function as a coordinated network, in which all components from sensors to weapon systems are connected to each other in real-time. This will reduce the time to identify any threat and take action in response to it.

The importance of joint combat capability was also underlined at the All Domain Joint Operations (ADJO) Conclave organized by the Western Air Command this year. At the conference, senior officials of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Defense Space Agency and Defense Intelligence Agency had stressed the need for better coordination, interoperability and integrated decision making system between different combat domains.

Apart from this, the experiences gained from Operation Sindoor were also mentioned, in which the decisive role of air power and the need for its coordination with ground operations was considered important. Experts believe that in modern conflicts, success is not possible on the strength of only one military branch, rather multi-domain operations will form the basis of future war strategy.

A major objective of the new doctrine is also to develop a permanent joint mechanism for planning, exchange of intelligence and prioritization of military capabilities. This will make possible more effective use of the resources of the three armies and will give new strength to strategic preparedness.

General Anil Chauhan has for a long time been emphasizing on pursuing the concept of theaterization and joint command structure in the Indian Armed Forces. Under the theater command system, work is underway on a plan to operate the three armies in an integrated structure instead of working separately. The new Joint Air Defense Doctrine is being considered an important pillar of this comprehensive change.

Through this new policy, India has taken an important step towards making its military strategy more modern, flexible and effective in line with the challenges of future wars.
