TMC-Congress merger speculations rejected, Venugopal says rumors are baseless!
“These are pure rumours. Our communication secretary has already clarified this. There is no basis for these things,” Venugopal said in a press conference held on Thursday.
He said that former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee had recently met senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi. However, dismissing the speculations regarding these meetings, he said that it was just a normal political discussion.
KC Venugopal said, “This was an extension of the discussions related to India Bloc. All parties want to strengthen the India Bloc and want to strengthen the democratic fight against this government. The topic of discussion was only this, nothing else.”
In fact, after Mamata Banerjee’s one-to-one meeting with Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday and Abhishek Banerjee’s separate meeting with Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday, speculations about the reunification of TMC and Congress had intensified.
However, Ritabrata Banerjee, leader of the new and majority faction of the TMC legislative party in the West Bengal Assembly and leader of the opposition in the Assembly, has clearly denied any possibility of merger of Congress and TMC.
Meanwhile, Congress has announced to launch a nationwide campaign for the next three months. KC Venugopal said that all the leaders and workers of the party will take to the streets on issues like price rise, unemployment, examination scams, social inequality and diplomacy weakened after the conflict in the Gulf region.
He also reacted to the issue of cancellation of Rajya Sabha nomination of Congress leader Meenakshi Natarajan. He said that there is no criminal case, FIR or charge sheet against him. His nomination was rejected merely on the ground of non-submission of a notice from the court.
Sushmita Dev said on leaving TMC, political and personal reasons!
