Union Home Minister Amit Shah has assured Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma that the central government will provide rice worth Rs 10 crore for the relief and assistance of refugees living in the state. Officials gave this information on Saturday.

According to a senior official of the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), during a meeting held in New Delhi on Friday evening, Chief Minister Lalduhoma told the Home Minister that around 40,000 refugees from Manipur, Bangladesh and Myanmar are currently living in Mizoram.

In response, Amit Shah said that the central government will provide rice worth Rs 10 crore to the Mizoram government for food and relief work for the refugees.

Chief Minister Lal Duhoma, who reached Delhi on an official visit, met Amit Shah at the Home Minister’s office at Dutva Bhawan and discussed many important issues related to the development and public welfare of Mizoram.

During the meeting, the Chief Minister informed that Mizoram is not getting assistance under the Security Related Expenditure (SRE) scheme like other North-Eastern states, as the state has been peaceful and free from insurgency and law and order problems for a long time.

He urged the Central Government to extend the benefits of the SRE scheme to Mizoram also to deal with drug trafficking, cross-border crimes and increasing cyber crimes.

Home Minister Amit Shah advised the Chief Minister to send more project proposals under the Prime Minister’s North-East Development Initiative (PM-DEWINE) scheme and assured all possible cooperation in taking these projects forward.

Chief Minister Lalduhoma also mentioned the humanitarian challenges posed by the large number of refugees coming from neighboring areas. He said that despite limited resources, the state government is providing shelter, food, health services and other essential assistance to the refugees, but it requires additional support from the central government.

It is noteworthy that after the military coup in Myanmar in February 2021, more than 30,000 Myanmar citizens have taken refuge in Mizoram. Apart from this, about 2,365 refugees from Chittagong Hill Tracts area of Bangladesh are also living in four districts of the state.

Mizoram has also provided shelter to thousands of tribal people displaced following violence between the Meitei and Kuki-Jo communities in Manipur since May 2023. Despite limited resources, the state government in collaboration with local communities and social organizations is providing humanitarian assistance to these displaced people.
