If action had been taken earlier in ‘Devdas’ and ‘Padmaavat’ cases, Chandradhari Singh would have been alive: AICWA!

Controversy is increasing continuously after the accident on the sets of film director Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s upcoming film ‘Love and War’. 42-year-old carpenter Chandradhari Singh Yadav died of electrocution during shooting on June 17 at Royal Pump Studio near Mumbai Film City. This accident allegedly happened due to short circuit, after which serious questions have been raised regarding the security arrangements on the film sets.

Now All India Cine Workers Association (AICWA) has given a sharp reaction on this matter and has demanded registration of FIR against Sanjay Leela Bhansali.

Speaking to IANS, organization president Suresh Shyamlal Gupta has alleged that safety rules were not followed properly on the film set, due to which the accident occurred. The employees working on the sets are not given necessary safety equipment and sometimes there is no provision for insurance for them. For this reason the lives of workers remain in danger.

Suresh Gupta said that the death of Chandradhari Singh Yadav is not the first incident. Such accidents have happened in Bhansali’s projects in the past also. There were deaths and accidents among workers during the shooting of films ‘Devdas’ and ‘Padmavat’. If the association and the government had taken direct action against Sanjay Bhansali during the shooting of Devdas, Chandradhari Singh would have been alive today.

Bhansali’s production house has announced a compensation of Rs 40 lakh for the family of Chandradhari Singh Yadav, which AICWA termed inadequate. He has demanded that a compensation of Rs 1 crore should be given to the victim’s family. This amount is not enough for the workers working in such big budget films.

AICWA has also demanded the government to take several strict steps. He said that a high level investigation should be conducted into this entire matter and shooting should be banned until the safety standards are confirmed. Along with this, security arrangements should be confirmed on all the film sets of Maharashtra, so that such accidents can be prevented in future.

Suresh Gupta has also raised questions on long working hours in the film industry. He said, “On many sets, workers are made to work for 18 to 20 hours instead of 14 hours, which increases the risk of accidents due to fatigue and carelessness. Working under constant pressure is also having a serious impact on the health of the workers.”

Meanwhile, the discussion regarding the film ‘Love and War’ has also intensified. The film is directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali and stars Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt and Vicky Kaushal in the lead roles. The film is said to be a love triangle based on a war backdrop.
